Early sail
On this day, in 1451, Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence, Italy. The first European to touch mainland America was Christopher Columbus in 1498. In 1499, Vespucci sailed via the Surinam coast and
the Gulf of Paria to the country they named Venezuela. Vespucci’s story of the Venezuelans became a bestseller, and led to a third of the world’s landmass being named America in his honour.
