The Galaxy
Most of the stars throughout the universe are grouped together in great star systems called galaxies. There are an enormous number of galaxies in the universe, each galaxy containing vast numbers of stars. Our sun, which is an aver-age-size star, is just one of about 1,000,000 stars in a galaxy we call the Milky
Way, or just the galaxy. To us, the Milky Way takes up just one part of the sky because we are looking through the galaxy from its edge. The over-all diameter of the galaxy, is about 100,000 light years (one light year' is about six million million miles). The sun is located about 30,000 light years from the centre of the Galaxy.
