Dramatic marathon success

PA Auckland Phillip Rush (Dunedin) could only watch in disappointment as his record in the national marathon swimming championships fell during the final race from Tiri Tiri Island to Browns Bay (Auckland) yesterday. Although Rush finished 30 seconds inside the race record of 3hr 7min, he was pipped, on handicap, at the finish by Otahuhu's Graham Faulkner, who completed the 17.6 km swim iri'3hr 55min. The first woman home was 14-year-old Elizabeth Horner (Christchurch) in 4hr 05min. Rush was sick during the race but his second placing, by fewer than 200 m, did not topple him from his position as over-all winner with 1690 points.
