South Ward councillor

Sir,—Your editorial article on the South Ward vacancy was right. It was proper and sensible for the Labour Council to appoint Mr James, not only because he is a man of obvious ability but also because of his excellent performance in the 1981 local body elections when he missed by only 275 voces. Clearly he is highly regarded in the South Ward. If the electors there nevertheless prefer a by-election, the means are available and the $16,000 cost must be accepted. The Labour Party would undoubtedly welcome the contest. I would welcome also the entry of Social Credit into local body affairs provided their candidate is genuinely interested in serving the ratepayers and does not merely use the opportunity to advance his personal and party interests for the next Parliamentary elections. Those who are asked to sign the petition must decide that question tor' themselves.—Yours, etc., * D. J. O'ROURKE. March 4, 1982.
