S.I. quinella at Trentham?

By J. J. BOYLE Powley and The Dimple those brilliant four-year-olc daughters of the leading sire Noble Bijou, will be attempting to extend a remarkable history of rivalry when they meet in the $30,000 Golden Mile at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham tomorrow. They have met seven times and the score is 4-3 in Powley’s favour. Only once in those seven clashes have the speedsters failed to provide the quinella. That was in the Show Gate Stakes at Washdyke in December, 1980, when Powley won and The Dimple was third a neck from the runner-up. Powley and The Dimple ended their three-year-old seasons with honours even, two wins apiece. But Powley has edged ahead this season. The Dimple, carrying I.skg less, beat the Wingatui star by half a head in the James Hazlett Stakes in December. But when they met at weight-for-age in the Smelter Stakes at Invercargill over the same distance (1600 m on January 5, Powley came, out on top by two lengths and a quarter. Their first clash for the season, in a 1600 m handicap at Invercargill in November, found The Dimple short of her best. But Powley’s measure of superiority was still staggering — eight lengths. This time Powley has to cope with top weight of 55.5. and The Dimple has 53.5. Since they last met. Powley has won the Adams Mile at Trentham and the White Robe Lodge Handicap at Wingatui; The Dimple, the C.J.C. Breeders' Stakes with impressive ease. Powley will probably be the favourite this time, but to justify it against The Dimple, for one, will probably demand the very best she can muster. The prospect of yet another Powley-The Dimple quinella brings an extraordinary measure of South Island interest to bear on the race. The Golden Mile is the second leg of the T.A.B. double. The first leg, the U.D.C. Finance Handicap, might resolve itself into a three-sided tussle, with Hagenblu, Nearco King, and Azawary the principals.
