McGinty in top form for Stakes
PA Auckland McGinty, assured of hot favouritism for the Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie, had to share the limelight with a race rival, Sterling Revel, in training at Takanini yesterday morning. McGinty, working again with his stablemate, Romantic Bay, was not after time. Galloping about 9m out on the No. 1 grass, which was cutting out, he still reeled off 1000 m in Imin 2.ssec, the last 800 m in 51.5 sec. It was a faster time than his trainer, Colin Jillihgs, expected the youngsters to return, and fresh evidence that McGinty will lack nothing in fitness for his first start in nearly six weeks. Sterling Revel caught the eye too, as he dashed over 1000 m with High Society in Imin 2sec. He looked promising when winning his first start, disappointed at his next two and was rested
through the summer by trainer Ray Verner. The grey colt has come back looking much improved. Romantic Bay is still in the field for the Eclipse Stakes but will be kept instead for the La Mer Stakes at New .Plymouth on Monday.
Jaunty Spi and Decanka were travelling well together at the finish of 800 m in 51.6 sec.
