Canty junior pursuit team wins clearly

As the initial skirmishes were got out of the way at the Healing national hard track cycling championships at Denton Park yesterday, one sure champion emerged from ‘*'e ruck. The Canterbury A junior pursuit team more than justified its firm fayouritsm for the 4000 m event when it annihilated all opposition in the qualifying round. The team of Brian Fowler, Craig Adair — the two survivors from last year’s recordbreaking quartet — Blanddyn Wills and Greg Fraine did a very smart 4min 51.225, a time which would have been good enough for a record two years ago.
As it is, it would not be at all surprising if the Canterbury team should be riding for a record, not just the gold medal, tomorrow evening, if the conditions should be anything like favourable. Yesterday ■ afternoon was rather typical Denton Park, a cool easterly in the early afternoon militating against exceptional times, though it had dropped a little as the programme wore on.
The qualifying brought the one mishap so far, the West Coast-North Island B team crashing among itself when trailing Wellington. Two riders went down, one, Dean Mclntosh, breaking his spectacles and cutting his face quite badly.
Not at all unexpectedly, the boys 450 m provided some of the most spectacular racing, and the most spectacular of all was Alan Miller (Wellington), already the 500 m time trial champion. In his heat, Miller recorded a sparkling 32.695, which took 0.26 s off Anthony Cuff’s record set more than eight years ago.
