Sydney rugby league
Mark Broadhurst, the former Canterbury prop, won the “man of the match” award and scored two tries when his Sydney rugby league club, Manly-Warrin-gah, beat Western Suburbs, 33-12, in the first premiership round. Another New Zealand forward, Kurt Sorensen, also touched down twice in Cron-ulla-Sutherland’s 22-8 victory at the expense of Balmain. South Island’s KB Cup opponent, Canberra, suffered a 37-7 loss to South Sydney in its first grade debut. The other new team, Illawarra, lost to Penrith, 17-7. Both 1981 grand finalists were beaten — Parramatta by Canterbury-Bankstown, 16-15, and Newtown by Eastern Suburbs, 11-5. St George beat North Sydney, 21-13.
