Lomax’s tilt at titles
The New Zealand high jump record-holder, Terry Lomax, will briefly set aside Ms Commonwealth Games jumping aspirations for a tilt |t the New Zealand decathlon title at Auckland on March 19, 20 and 21. Lomax, who recently won the Canterbury decathlon championship with a solid score of 6399 points, is the sole senior competitor in the Canterbury team for the national championships, announced yesterday by the convener of selectors, Mr Valdemars Briedis. Others capable of good performances in the decathlon such as the national pole
vault champion, Kieran McKee, have preferred to concentrate all their efforts into their specialist event. Karen Forbes and Lyn Aben have been chosen .for the senior women’s heptathlon, and both will be hoping for totals which will shunt them into consideration for the Commonwealth Games. Angela Pule, holder of the New Zealand senior high jump, will be the only Canterbury competitor in the junior women’s heptathlon. There is plenty of depth in the junior men’s decathlon team. Five, have been named, including the two very promising South Canterbury
brothers, John and Toby Hunt. Toby is still eligible for the under 18 grade but his score so impressed the selectors that they chose him for the junior team. The others are Gary McKernan and Michael Williams, of Ashburton and Mark Slattery, who has the distinction of being the only representative from a Christchurch club. He competes for Toe H.
