High Country Field Day arrangements

Next Thursday's South Island High Country Field Day is open to all interested people and is not restricted to High Country Association or Federated Farmers’ members, according to a spokesman for the organisers. The field day will begin at Maori Lakes, towards the back of the 10,000 hectare Barrosa Station, and the organisers of the event have stressed that this point is some 40 minutes by road from Mt Somers township. They are concerned that people attending will time their departures from home to arrive at the Barrosa homestead, at the foot of the station, at the advertised starting time of 9.30 a.m. not

realising that the Maori Lakes starting point is some distance further on. Efforts have been made to make everyone aware of the extra distance and time" involved in getting to Maori Lakes by 9.30 a.m. People attending will hear how development methods have raised the stock carrying capacity of the 10.000 hectare station from 5,600 stock units when purchased by the Griggs in 1966, to 11,000 in 1971 and 19,000 today. The extra capacity has been achieved with pastoral and agricultural improvements and further increases are planned.
