Japan top wool buyer

New Zealand’s top customer for wool in the first six months of the 1981-82 season was Japan which took 14,141 clean tonnes, according to Wool Board export figures.

Other countries in the top 10 were: the U.K. (11,237 tonnes), the U.S.S.R.. (9983), China (7601), the Netherlands (7426), France (6938), Iran (6480), West Germany (5846). Australia (4688) and South Korea (3920).

In the first six months of the 1980-81 season the top 10 customers in order were the U.K., Japan, China, the Netherlands, Iran, France, West Germany, the U.S.S.R., the United States and Australia.

In the first six months of the 1981-82 season 703,385 bales of greasy and 10.923 bales of scoured wool with a combined weight of 105,059 tonnes sold at auction for $281.78 million. The amount of wool sold was 2 per cent more than in the same period last season while the value of the wool was up 7.5 per cent, according to the Wool Board.
