Wapiti in deer auction

A Wapiti stag and hind will be among about IHO deer to be offered for sale at auction at Oxford on Monday.

This is believed to be the first time that Wapiti have been auctioned in Canterbury. Wapiti are becoming popular with deer farmers because of their heavy body weight and the fact that they grpw more velvet.

The auction will be the first in Canterbury for nearly two. years and buyers from Southland to the middle of the North Island are expected. Deer prices slumped about two years ago but interest in deer farming has been revived recently. The Wapiti are both two-year-old animals which will .-, be sold on behalf of Mr Ml A. Black, of Ohoka. The sale'*?, will be held at the deer selling complex on the property of Messrs G. J. Bollings at Coopers Creek. Mr Black is disposing of his entire herd of about 100 deer including six five-year hinds and six weaner hinds.', The other animals include yearling stags, breeding stags and velveting stags. Another unusual deer to be offered is a white Fallow

master stag with a full set of antlers. This stag, which has cut. 8.751 b of velvet, will be sold on behalf of Mr G,

Bollings, who will also have a black Fallow master stag for sale. Thirty weaner stags, 12

weaner hinds and four adult hinds will be offered by Mr O. Urquhart, of Flock Bill. Other vendors will offer

weaner hinds, yearling hinds and yearling stags. The auction will be conducted by Wrightson N.M.A., Ltd.
