Big response to competition

Last week’s “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” competition which offered 50 double pass tickets as prizes to see the film, which starts at the Regent tomorrow week, and 10 copies of John Fowles’ novel on which the movie was based, resulted in a gratifying large response. The opening of entries had to be stopped at mid-day last Tuesday before the final judging could be done. Amazingly, almost all entries proved to be correct, making the judging even more difficult. Because of this, neatness and correct spelling (particularly of “Manhattan” and the last names of Samantha Eggar and Michael Caine) had to be taken into account. Another error, made by only two entrants, was to supply the names, from “A” to “E,” for the first two questions in the wrong order.

(Some people also supplied exactly the same answers,

with the same errors, in different letters, under a variety of names; while others forgot to put their names and addresses on to correct entries.) On the other hand, many entrants supplied much more information than actually requested (and polite, additional letters) which were also taken into account. The three questions and answers are: 1.. Name the five pictured women nominated for best emy Awards and the films in which they appear: A. Katherine Hepburn; “On Golden Pond;” B. Meryl Streep, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman;” C. Diane Keaton, “Reds;” , D. Susan Sarandon, “Atlantic City;” ,E. Marsha Mason, “Only When I Laugh.” 2. Name the five pictured men and the films in which they have appeared with Meryl Streep: A. Robert de Niro, “The Deerhunter,” B. Alan Alda, “The Seduction of Joe Tynan;” C. Woody Allen, “Manhattan;” D. Dustin Hoffman, “Kramer vs Kramer,” E. . Jeremy Irons, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman.” 3. Name the two other books by John Fowles which ' have been made into movies, and list the leading players in each one: “The Collector,” with Terence Stamp, Samantha Eggar and Mona Washbourne, directed by William

Wyler, filmed in 1965; and “The Magus,” with Michael Caine, Anthony Quinh, Candice Bergen, Anna Karina, Paul Stassino, Julian Glover and George Pastell, directed by Guy Green, filmed in 1968. • The winners of the 10 copies of the book, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman,” supplied by Gordon and Gptch, and 10 pass- tickets td see the film at any time from its commencement at the Regent on Friday, March 12, are: E..W.
