Burglar destroys Rembrandt

NZPA London A Rembrandt masterpiece has been lost for ever because a burglar threw -it down a London drain, not realising its value. The story of the disaster that has rocked the art world was told at the Old Bailey yesterday when Adrian Pugh, aged 18. unemployed, was sent to Borstal after pleading guilty to burglary, the “Standard” reported. Miss Pennant Iremonger, prosecuting, said that the Rembrandt was a tiny etching stolen last March from the offices of a company called West One Selection. The mqtchbox-sized masterpiece belonged to Brian Saltzer, and was worth ?NZBI2O. Pugh had apparently kept the frame but thrown the etching down a drain. A rescue operation was mounted by Westminster sewermen after Pugh confessed. There was' a slight chance the etching had been caught in a catchment net. But after seven hours 'they gave up.
