Auckland leads sailing
PA Dunedin The fifth and sixth races of the Sanders Cup for javelin yachts were sailed yesterday in a light north-easterly ‘at Port Chalmers. With one race to go, and having , dropped its worst performance, Auckland (Koro, Paul. Scoffin, Dean .Coleman) has a narrow points advantage over Southland (Vitamin C, Paul Head and Wayne Shaw). Canterbury (Taniwha, Keith May and Brent Cowan) is only four points, further back. Yesterday morning’s race provided the closest of the series. Hawke’s Bay (Peter Christie and Peter Parcin) led the first round, but at the bottom mark the fleet had moved up and there was only 30 seconds between the seven boats. On the next beat, Canter-
bury took the lead but was passed by Auckland, which crossed the line 20 seconds in front. In the afternoon race Southland obtained a good start and increased its lead to be two minutes ahead of Auckland at the finish line. The minor places were more closely fought, with Auckland only three seconds ahead of Canterbury at the finish. Results — Fifth race: Auckland 1, Canterbury 2. Southland 3, Wellington 4, Hawke’s Bay 5, South Canterbury 6, Otago 7. Sixth race: Southland 1, Auckland 2, Canterbury 3, Wellington 4, Otago 5, Hawke’s Bay 6, South Canterbury 7. Points after six races (with the worst performances dropped) are: Auckland 11.7, Southland 13.7, Canterbury 17.7, Wellington 27.7, Otago 45.4, Hawke’s Bay 53.4, South Canterbury 63.7.
