‘Alternative’ games
PA Hamilton Maori athletes will be asked to participate in an alternative “black games” event being planned to coincide with the official Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. Te Matakite o Aotearoa’s president, Mrs Eva Rickard, said yesterday she had just received a monthly newsletter from Australia’s
National Aboriginal Conference announcing the event, and said she would be taking it up with Maori groups. She said the N.A.C. was planning an alternative Aboriginal and Torres Island sporting and cultural carnival fo be held in .Brisbane to coincide with ‘ the Commonwealth Games. The N.A.C. was also inviting member organisations of
■ the World Council of Indi- , genous Peoples, to which the ; New Zealand Maori Council is affiliated, as well as .repre- ; sentatives of the “black Com- ; monwealth,” she said. I According .to the ■ newsletter, the event is being • held as a protest against Queensland government attitudes to Aboriginal land ■ rights and ' self-determina- : tion.
