Rail charges criticised
PA Wellington Rail charge increases which took effect on Sunday will increase the Railways’ losses and cost the taxpayer more than $lOO million this year, the Labour Party has claimed. The Shadow Minister of Transport, Mr R. W. Prebble,
said the 15 per cent across-the-board increase was “stupid” and not a sound business move. He said that some areas of Railways business, such as the ferries, were making good profit, and the increases would only damage patron-, age and be “counter-produc-tive.”
