World’s fastest mile?

PA Auckland The world’s fastest mile could be run in Auckland early next month—down Queen St.

The mile race will feature the former world mile recordholder, John Walker, the American recordholder, Steve Scott, the world’s third fastest miler the South African born Sydney Maree, and two Irishmen, Eamonn Coghlan and Ray Flynn. It will be held in Queen Street, starting in Karangahape Road and finishing at the corner of Custom Street and Queen Street.

The mile starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday April 3, will be televised live throughout New Zealand and will be sold to United States television.

With the long downhill run from Karangahape Road to Custom Street, the mile seems certain to be run faster than any time in history. The world track record is held by Britain’s Sebastian Coe at 3min 47.335, while Maree has the fastest mile yet run on the road — 3min 47.525. Maree won the inaugural Fifth Avenue, New York mile, in this time last year.

World records on the road are not recognised. Permission to stage the mile was granted by the New Zealand Amateur Athletics Association at its meeting in Wellington on Tuesday night.
