Tour unwinder for Australians

PA Nelson The touring Australian cricket team takes on a combined Nelson-Marl-borough side in a limitedover match at Trafalgar Park today. Nine of the combined side were members of the successful Hawke Cup series side and five, including the captain, Jock Edwards, have represented Central Districts. Nelson is unbeaten in 13 defences of the Hawke Cup, most on the ground on which they will meet , the Australians today. They are a classy combination, chockful of batting talent and will give the Australians a run for their money in the right circumstances; but the Australians are likely to use the match as little more than an unwinder after a tiring beginning to their New Zealand tour.

The Nelson-Marlborough clash does not carry firstclass honours and is sure to be played in a friendly and informal atmosphere; but the combined; - side’s /ability should not- be underestimated..'/' ■■ ■' ■*' They may take it on themselves to give the tourists a match to remember and are quite capable of testing the ■ Australians in the demanding arena of one-day -cricket. Jock Edwards, who will captain the side, scored 99 against Australia for Central Districts in 1977, at Trafalgar Park, and although his form this season has been poor, he is a player who. can strike top form at a moment’s notice. The boundaries at the park are notoriously, short and if Edwards-.’finds his touch today the expected capacity crowd ofi-3000 may see some fireworks.
