Italian political leaders have demanded more information from the Government on why a nuclearpowered submarine, apparently Soviet, was able to spy on an important naval base at Taranto in southern Italy. The American admiral who commands N.A.T.O. forces in southern Europe said that the incident • showed that gaps existed in Italian defences. Italian aircraft and helicopters chased a nonN.A.T.O. submarine out of the Gulf of Taranto last week. — Rome.
