Classic adapted
Ibsen’s 19th-century Norwegian classic, “Peer -Gynt,” has been adapted to an Irish setting in a BBC production to be heard in three parts on the radio Concert Programme this week. The first part will be broadcast at 9.30 tonight. “Peer Gynt” is about a superstitious country community which believes in witchcraft and goblins. Translator and adapter Michael Meyer decided that Irish speech would fit, for “Ireland is still full of very primitive communities where people do believe in the leprechauns." Noted English actor Denis Quillet plays Peer Gynt in this production, there is music specially composed by David Cain and production is by Martin Jenkins.
Beethoven The Beethoven Emperor Concerto, the Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat, is featured on Concert at 7.17 tonight in a performance recorded by the Berlin Philharmonic with von Karajan conducting and piano soloist Alexis Weissenberg. 1930 s hits Nelson Eddy and Jeannette Macdonald sing hits from the movie musicals of the 1930 s (National Programme 8 p.m.) from a recording of their last radio show together.
