Arabs to lean on U.S. allies

NZPA-Reuter . Tunis Arab Foreign Ministers meeting at Tunis have condemned the United States for its diplomatic support of Israel's annexing of the Syrian Golan Heights. But the special meeting of the Arab League council failed to endorse Syrian demands for drastic economic sanctions against the United States.

The special session was requested by Syria after Washington last month vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution, calling for voluntary sanctions against the Jewish State for annexing the territory which it has occupied since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

The Ministers condemned United States policy in the Middle East, saying it was hostile to Arab interests! and urged Washington to end all military and financial aid to Israel which would allow the Jewish State to perpetuate its occupation of Arab territories. . !

They also said that the attitude of Japan and some European States which did not support Arab resolutions at the United Nations could have negative effects on their relations with the Arab world.

Earlier this month Japan and all main West European States except Greece voted against a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling on all member States to cease all dealings with Israel.

They feared that it would lead to Israel's suspension from the world body—an objective which the Tunis meeting said ‘the Arab League would campaign for. The meeting also decided to set up a six-member Ministerial committee to "assess political and economic links between Arab States and those States which support Israel in order to,“review, these links- in the light dp their position towards.. the. Arab rights.”., The committee made up for Saudi Arabia. Kuwait. Jordan. Algeria. Iraq and the Palestine Liberation Organisation. will report to the next Arab summit meeting, in Morocco later this year. Syria wanted the 'weekend’s meeting to end imports from the United States, withdraw Arab funds from American institutions and end links with American firms trading in the .Arab world, but these were not welcomed by the moderate Arab States, conference sources said. i
