Man on arson charges
Christchurch detectives have arrested and charged a young man in connection with fires last year af the Methodist Central Mission and the church's Aldersgate Centre in Durham Street. Colyn David Stoves, aged 19. a’ window cleaner/ faces 13 charges involving 1 arson, attempted arson, setting fire to a .car. burglary; and the unlawful' taking of motorvehitftes. ■: ;■ Stcft&s .appeared .briefly, in the day /morning 'and was re-
manded in custody until today by Messrs R. S. Leach and J. A. Coakley. Justices of the Peace. Eight of the charges relate to incidents at the Methodist Central Mission, in Cambridge Terrace, between April and December last year. Stoves is charged with wilfully attempting to set fire to the mission's office premises: setting fire to the offices on two occasions; wilfully setting fire to the mission's' printing shop; burgling the
printing premises: and unlawfully taking an $BOOO van on two occasions. He is further charged with wilfully setting fire to the van. Stoves is also charged with wilfully setting fire to the Aldersgate Centre. The duty solicitor (Mr G. D. Horne) sought bail for Stoves, but bail was opposed by the police prosecutor. Sergeant G. G. Cleland. Sergeant Cleland said he had been told that further charges were pending.
