Good start for Canterbury
Canterbury tennis teams had a satisfying prelude to the Wilding Shield and Nunnbley Casket competitions by beating Wellington in a representative match at Central Park. Wellington, on Sat-; urdav. The Canterbury players won all four mixed doubles to clinch the contest by 12 matches to tour. In the top women's singles Sally Chapman, of Canterbury, went down in three sets to Belinda Cordwcl! aged 16. the runner-up in the recent national senior singles final. Results with Canterbury names first, were:— Mens singles.—M. Mooney beat D Patterson. 6-3. 4-6. 6-2; H. Robinson lost to N. Carter. 3-6. 46; B. Hibbert beat J. Grubi. 6-1. 6- R. Masorf lost to P McErlain. 6-2. 6-7. 3-6. Mens coubies.-Mooney and Hibbert lost to Patterson and Carter 4-6. 7-6. 5-7; Mason and Robinson beat Grubi and McErlain. 3-6. 7-5. 7-5 Womens singles.-S. Chapmanlost to B. Cordwell. 5-7. 6-3. 4-6. J. Phillips beat K. Waddell. 6-1. 7- P. Lewthwaite beat S. Velvin. 6-1. 4-6. 6-4; C. Oakley beat J Callender. 6-0. 7-5. Women's doubles.-Misses Chapman and Oakley beat Misses Cordwell and Callender. 6-2. 6-3: Misses Phillips and Lewthwaite beat Misses Velvin and Waddell. 7-5. 4-6. 7-5.
