Hawke Cup ‘evenly poised’

PA Nelson The Cyclone series cricket match for the Hawke Cup between Nelson and Hawke’s Bay was evenly poised after the second day’s play at Nelson yesterday. Hawke's Bay batted first and scored 410 runs in its first innings ,to put the pressure on holders Nelson. Nelson batted soundly and sensibly in its first innings yesterday to be 177 for one wicket at stumps.

The Hawke’s Bay captain. Mike Shrimpton. won the toss and elected to bat first on Saturday and his side batted well to tot up the biggest score against Nelson in 11 Hawke Cup challenges. The young allrounder Stuart Duff provided the highlight of the Hawke’s Bay innings with 102 runs. Duff came in at number eight and was 48 not out overnight. He batted Hawke’s Bay through to lunch on the second day but was out lbw to the third ball after lunch.

Hawke's Bay’s other top scorers were Don Poulgrain with 81 and John Wiltshire with 60. Poulgrain had a particularly fine innings and built several solid partnerships to steer Hawke's Bay to a handy first innings total. The Nelson opening batsmen Brian Schwass and John Smith gave the home side a slow, but sure start with 106 runs for the first wicket.
