Men’s games end quickly
•All the premier men's softball was over, in just 55min on Saturday. Papanui beating ; Home Bakery Lyttelton,-1-0, . in regulation innings Papanui Domain. The win was only the second Papanui had . man;’aged over the Ypro"-team this season, and this success came rather more easily. A fortnight earlier Papanuf had taken 12 innings and a marathon 160 min to get home. Little putting of bat to ball was achieved ‘ oh Saturday
with the two teams managing only three safe hits be- ? tween theny Rennie Tai. Papahui's successful batter, managed the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth innings. He hit to short-stop, made second base on a sacrifice by Phil Claude, and plated when a throw from first base to third base was errored. Lyttelton had a good chance to equalise in the top of the seventh when Dennis Wiersma (who had hit to second base) was on third
with only one down. How-' ever. Papanui's pitcher, Colin Sutherland, struck-out Brian Collins and the experienced infielder. Tony Bishop, then , threw out Ross Fife for?the, third out. and the ball game. - No players from either side made base until the third innings and both pitchers finished with good figures. Fife fated 20 batters and struck-out six of them while pitching a one-hit game. Sutherland “fanned" eight of the 24 batters he faced and conceded hits only
to Wiersma and Ben Te Karu. ... Noel Leeming Burnside had a game deferred for the second .Saturday in a row. this time because three team members were eh route to Whangarei for the New Zealand colts tournament. This Saturday no premier men’s games at all are scheduled, but the need. for catch-up encounters will mean games instead on Sunday. together with the following Monday. Tuesday, and Wednesday.
