THE MAN behind getting the Maori All Blacks to play two matches in Spain after their Welsh tour later this year is the former Christchurch, and University, player, Roger Mahan. Mahan has been living in Spain for some years and he is deeply involved in rugby coaching there. It was he who put forward the idea of the Maoris stopping off in Spain — they will probably play games in Madrid and Barcelona — and the proposal has since been approved by both the Welsh and New Zealand unions. DAVID STEAD, the Riccarton and Canterbury all-rounder, will probably not forget last Sunday’s round of club cricket for a while. During the day (in two Old Boys innings) Stead picked up six wickets, but in the process he was hit for six towering sixes by the left-hander, Gary MacDonald. What was worse, however, was the course of an over in the morning in which an incredible four catches were dropped off his bowling— surely a record in senior club cricket. LINDSAY ANDERSON, the Burnside third baseman who made a sensational batting debut for New Zealand in the four-test series against the American softball champion, Peterbilt, last season, has now found other talents. According to Michael Hall, Burnside’s latest national representative, Anderson is now pitching for Western Australia and is being touted by the newspapers there as “the Dennis Lillee of softball.” IT IS MORE THAN 15 years since Dave Gerrard won justified fame for his victory in the 100 m butterfly championship at the Kingston Commonwealth Games, the first “Commonwealth” Games incidentally. In subequent years, Gerrard dabbled in surf lifesaving and now, nearing 40 and with iron-grey hair, he is still an enthusiastic lifeguard for St Clair. At the Fresh Up South Island championships, Dr Gerrard was called into his professional capacity when Ken Jones crashed awkwardly in a run-off in the senior beach flags. Fortunately, his original prognostication that Jones' could miss the Canterbury team’s Australian tour was not borne out by X-rays in hospital: Jones's arm was found to be only badly strained. ■SATURDAY S CRICKET ■ I New Zealand v Australia, one-day international, * Auckland.
