Information bill controversy
Wellington reporter
The controversial Official Information Bill, based on the report of the Danks Committee and referred to a Parliamentary Select Committee after its introduction last year, is already the subject of new controversy this year. The Leader of the Social Credit League (Mr Beetham) has been dropped from the list of Opposition members of the Select Committee, and has complained about his omission.
No date had been set for the select committee’s first meeting, so the dispute still
has time to be resolved.
Mr P. C. East is expected to be the chairman of the committee.
Other committee members are the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay), the Minister of Health (Mr Malcolm), Mr M. J. Minogue, Miss Ruth Richardson and the Minister for the Environment (Dr Shearer) for the Government, and Mr M. J. Cullen, Mr C. W. R. Palmer, Mr R. W. Prebble and Mrs Fran Wilde.
Meanwhile, in anticipation of the bill’s being passed, the State Services Commission has set up a special investigation of its likely impact.
