‘Mothers’ Exhibition
Sir,—This exhibition showing at the McDougall Art Gallery has already been displayed in many New Zealand galleries. I sincerely hope that the other galleries have put some effort into the presentation of these works, and have not exhibited them as poorly as our local gallery. There has been no attempt to number individual works, and no attempt to ensure positive identification of artist or title. Some works are missing, even some considered worthy enough for inclusion in the catalogue. I feel deeply disappointed at the lack of effort that gallery staff have put into this exhibition, and would like to know how the director can allow this-to happen. Considering also the months that the permanent collection has occupied the prime viewing area makes me wonder why a worthy and fresh exhibition, such as “Mothers.” cannot be given higher priority.—Yours, etc., MICHAEL SIMPSON. February 4, 1982.
[Mr John Coley, Director, Robert McDougall Art Gallery, replies: “The ‘Mothers’ exhibition is indeed a worthy and interesting exhibition which the gallery is pleased to be able to bring to Christchurch; The exhibition is well hung in the limited space available for it. The labelling is that provided by the originators of the exhibition. The time required for the intensive preparation of forthcoming exhibitions does not make it feasible for staff to demount the permanent exhibition and reinstall it at the conclusion of a touring exhibition. It is now our policy to have the popular works of the city’s collection accessible to the public in long-term installations. I regret Mr Simpson’s dissatisfaction. We are always available to discuss the gallery’s operations."]
