Oringi men sign up
PA Dannevirke Many Oringi freezing workers had. yesterday applied .to become members of the West Coast branch of the New Zealand Meatworkers’ Union, in spite of being threatened with dismissal if they did so, said the union's national secretary, Mr A. J. . Kennedy, last evening. , After meeting all day with the . workers, Mr Kennedy would not reveal how many had signed up, but said there was a very substantial number.
He said he had' assured those who had signed that if Pacific Freezing did sack them, the company would have to deal with ‘ the full weight of the trade and labour movement. Later. Mr G. Lowe, managing director of Pacific Freezing (N.Z.). Ltd. said that
a number of Oringi workers had walked out in protest on Mr Kennedy when he invited them to join the West Coast branch of the union. Mr Lowe said the men joined workmates who had left the meeting earlier.
