‘Faith lost’ in N.Z. judiciary
PA Wellington The chairman of the Auckland Rugby Union. Mr Ron Don. made another attack against the New Zealand judicial system at yesterday's council meeting in Wellington of the New Zealand Rugby Union. Commenting on a statement read bv the chairman of N.Z.R.F.U.. Mr C. A. Blazey. at the meeting from the Minister of Police (Mr Couch) Mr Don said it concerned him that courts were not showing impartiality over the Springbok tour. “I am sad to have io say this but I have lost faith in the judiciary of this country.” he said.
Mr Don cited examples of what he considered to be inconsistent penalties imposed on pro and anti-tour individuals appearing in court.
But Mr Blazey* disagreed. "Contrary to Mr Don’s opinion." said Mr Blazey. ’T have a lot of faith in our judicial system and I do not really want to get into a debate on the subject of the courts." . :
Earlier Mr Don had also criticised the news media which, he said, had recently made determined efforts to undermine the police. The chairman of the union's Promotions and Public Relations sub-committee, Mr Russell Thomas (Canterbury) was also critical of newspaper editorials written concerning the tour. "I just wish that every editor in New Zealand would pul their name at the bottom of editorials," he said.
“We have to stand up and be counted and 1 cannot see why it should not be the same for newspaper editors as well."
