Overstayers remanded for one month

PA ■ Dunedin Two British overstayers were remanded to March 19, in the District Court at Dunedin, to allow them time to raise’money towards the $5OOO it:- will cost them and their three sons to return to England.,, Francis Patrick Kelly, aged 48, and Barbara Anne Kelly, aged 41, pleaded guilty to charges of overstaying extensions to their temporary permits. arrived in New Zealand on February 5, 1981, on February 3 this year the extensions to their permits expired, and they have been staying in New Zealand illegally since February 4. Counsel for the defence, Miss A. J. Laidlaw, said the Kellys’ had made a further application directly to' the Minister (Mr Malcolm) to allow them to stay long enough to raise the $5OOO, but Mr Bates said this money would normally be paid by the Department and it was the Kellys’ own choice to try arid pay it themselves.
