Sinai force discussions end

PA Wellington Talks on New Zealand’s contribution to the Sinai peace-keeping force have ended in Wellington with some details still to be sorted out. The week-long talks between New Zealand Defence, Treasury, and Foreign- Affairs officials with American

officials from the Multinational . Force Observers ended with points of international law and the “precise shape and size of the New Zealand contingent” still to be finalised. The Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Cooper) said yesterday, “I think that for the time being we have taken

things about as far as we can.” The United States officials had returned to Washington and would return next week if necessary, “But there is a possibility we may be able to settle the outstanding issues cable.”

Mr Cooper said the March 20 target date for contingents making up the M.F.O. to assemble in Sinai still stood. Final travel arrangements for the New Zealand contribution — a helicopter support group — have still to be settled.
