Contest finds 186 good neighbours

There are more good neighbours in Christchurch than there are calories in a slice of bread. That at least is the experience of the manager of Boon’s Freshbake in Colombo Street, Mr Murray Scott. For the last two weeks the bakery has been running a good-neighbour contest. People were invited to write nominating neighbours who had been good to them and prizes ($3OO worth of kitchenware) were offered to the winner, and to the person who wrote the winning letter. The bakery received/186 letters. Mr Scott, who read all of them, said that he was amazed at what some people did to help others. The winner was Mrs Linda Major, of 358 Blenheim Road. She was nominated by Mrs Tricia Aubrev.

I Mrs Major babysits Mrs i Aubrey’s two-year-old son i and “at least 10 other children round the neighbour- ■ hood,” sets three neighbour s f hair each week, helps other > with baking and housework, and is at present driving an j unemployed girl to job interi views. “She never asks for any- ■ thing in return, and always ’ has a friendly smile and a 1 pot of tea on the stove,” Mrs ■ Aubrey wrote. 5 Another good neighbour 1 nominee was Carole j Williams, of 5 Pauline Street. ’ “She looked after our f canary, which whistles non--5 stop, and fed our cat while > we were on holiday, and looked after my daughter’s j pet geckos which the poor i thing had to catch flies for,” ,• wrote her friend, Barbara McCosh.
