Busy time for Burnside
Noel Leeming Burnside will head for Wellington four days be * ore an Am men’s ciub softball nationals begin next month — but the reason is not over-enthusiasm. That particular tournament begins at Hataitai Park on March 3 and Burnside has now qualified as well for the Qantel knock-out tournament at the same venue on February 28
Burnside's' coach. Mr Arnold Hall, said that qualifying for the prestigious Qantel tournament would mean paying for two night's extra accommodation. But there were compensations. Even if Burnside finished fourth behind the North Island sides (Broadway, Ramblers, and A. C. Delco) at the Quantel, about $BOO will be coming its way. “And maybe we'll see a bit of cricket on March 1 and 2." said Mr Hall, noting that the first test will be on between New Zealand and Australia.
Bumside made the Qantel
tournament for the second year in succession after beating Wanderers. of Dunedin. 1-0, in the southern zone final at Surrey Park. Invercargill, on Sunday. Mr Hall said that Burnside had got “the easy end of the draw" and went straight to the final after thrashing G. T. Furnishers, of Ashburton. 10-0, in the first game.
The final began dramatically with Michael Hall hitting Peter Roberts' second pitch to the fence, and he was subsequently batted home by Roger Huttori. That, howeverr. was to be the only run of the game though Graeme Anderson extracted two hits off Roberts. For Burnside. Robert (Chub) Tangaroa pitched a no-hitter.
Playing in the Quantel tournament will be useful to Burnside for a further reason than just top match practice. Of the other three teams only Broadway will not be at the Pan Am: Miramar will be Wellington's representative in the second tournament.
