Unloading L.P.G.
Sir, — Approval has again been given to Liquigas to discharge L.P.G. at the oil wharf — Lyttelton Harbour Board meeting. On this serious subject, board members' opinions are widely divided. Why? Captain Fast, almost certainly the best qualified board member to comment on modern shipping practice, has consistently warned of the danger within the harbour posed by the existing oil berth. Why increase the danger with L.P.G.? What those other professionals, directly and legally responsible for navigation and safety, to say? Why the silence from them? What modern port would have a sports facility placed where thousands will congregate, adjacent to a high risk tank storage farm — an area without adequate security? The grave frequency of petrol spillages in the past, hardly inspires confidence in Lyttelton citizens. To berth an L.P.G.
tanker at the oil wharf, with its own potential danger, gives no room for positive optimism. — Yours, etc., STAN HEMSLEY. February 10, 1982.
