Jury trial

PA Whangarei Sandra Lorraine Coney, aged 37, an editor, of Herrie Bay, Auckland, yesterday elected trial by jury when she faced charges of assaulting the Governor-General by throwing a golf ball and an egg at him at Waitangi on Waitangi Day.

No bail terms were set for Coney who appeared in the District Court at Pikowai, and she refused to accept the invitation of Judge Paul to see the duty solicitor. Asked if she wished to have her case dealt with by the Court or by a jury, she read a statement saying that she “stood in solidarity with the black people in New Zealand who opposed the fraudulence of Waitangi.”

She was remanded to March 29 for a depositions hearing. Seven other people also appeared on charges relating to explosive devices, disabling substances, assault, and disorderly behaviour arising out of events at Waitangi. Two of the defendants were also charged with using insulting language outside the courthouse yesterday.
