Coal ship manning pact soon?

Agreement may be reached soon between the Shipping Corporation and Jebsen’s (N.Z.), Ltd, for New Zealand seamen to man at least one collier on the run from Lyttelton to Far Eastern ports. The Seamen’s Union has mounted a campaign for several years to have its members man the colliers. Its president, Mr David Morgan, said from Wellington last evening that although the talks were still continuing he was optimistic that New Zealand seafarers would be “reoresented.” The Jebsen line’s New Zealand manager, Mr Frank Ross (Auckland), said that talks were still before both boards and no final decision had been reached.

Preliminary plans called for the introduction of one, New Zealand manned 35,000tonne vessel into the coal trade.
