Police raid Chch gun shop

The entire stock of firearms at the Gun City shop in High Street was seized by the Christchurch police yesterday morning.

A police spokesman confirmed that more than 200 rifles, shotguns, and other weapons had been taken from the shop after the owner’s arms dealer’s certificate had been revoked by the Commissioner of Police, Mr R. J. Walton.

The raid was supervised by a senior officer from the national police headquarters in Wellington.

It is believed to be the biggest seizure of firearms from a shop in New Zealand.

The police refused to comment on the reason, or reasons, for the revoking of the dealer’s licence.

A spokesman said that the dealer could appeal against the commissioner’s decision.

“It is quite likely that he might appeal, which’ would make the whole matter sub judice,” the spokesman said. The management of Gun City, which was still open for business yesterday with its remaining stocks of outdoor equipment, also refused to comment.

The seized firearms are being kept under lock and key at the Christchurch Central Police Station.

The police spokesman said that the dealer would be allowed to sell the weapons to other authorised dealers, but not to members of the public.
