Guide publicity criticised

PA Rotorua The publicity given to allegations that a guide at the Whakarewarewa thermal reserve had made racist remarks to tourists, was criticised yesterday by the director of the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, Mr S. R. Harris. The publicity given such allegations “makes me sick.” he said. “The number of

complimentary letters received by dur guides far outweighs the complaints. “Some of them get beautiful letters from tourists, but they are never publicised.” Mr Harris said he felt that the guide concerned should be given the opportunity to reply to the allegations. “There is always a possibility it could be a malicious accusation, but we can’t ver-

ify that until we have had a thorough investigation," he said. Mr Harris said that he would much prefer to discuss such complaints with people face to face. It appeared that the letter of complaint concerned had been sent to “The Press” and to the Tourist and Publicity Department before it had been sent to the institute.
