‘Care needed in pit work’
Workers should be extra careful when working in garage pits, said the assistant district superintendent of the Labour Department, (Mr D. Poselthwaite) in Christchurch yesterday. A mechanic working in a pit in a garage at Rangiora died in a fire on Wednesday. Mr Poselthwaite said that there was no law ■ against working in pits, but there were guidelines for working on containers such as petrol tanks. Anyone in doubt would
be advised to consult the Labour Department or obtain a pamphlet explaining correct procedures. One of the problems with a garage pit was that it tended to collect petrol fumes because the fumes were heavier than air. The fumes were invisible, and would stay in a pit until dispersed by air movement. It only took a match or a flash-back from a welding torch to ignite the fumes.
