Ladies’ day at Southland?
Special correspondent Invercargill The combined efforts of Mary Wake. In Flight and Albatross should ensure that mares continue to dominate the southern scene in the $lO,OOO Radio Southland 4ZA Special, first leg of the Southland Racing Clubs T.A.B. double tomorrow. And if the combined efforts of that trio is not good enough then Helens Ridge, another mare, is well capable of chiming in. Only Noble Boa and Kopara, it seems, might be capable of beating the mares. Mary Wake, winner of the Fireside and Tapanui Cups in November and December, has had time to freshen since finishing a creditable fifth in the Invercargill Cup, when she was left handier than she lik' 'tr r ly ; ‘.he co-*
ikes too early in the contest. If Douglas Shaw can hold
her up for a late run, her undoubted class could carry the day for her. Bill Hillis, her trainer, is adept at producing stayers in fresh, hard condition.
In Flight narrowly beat Double D’Or on the first day at Gore, and Albatross returned to her best when successful on the second day of the Gore meeting. .
Noble Boa. a talented Win.ganui five-year-old, beat all but Miles Better on the first day of the Canterbury midsummer meeting. He was second past the post in the Dunedin Cup but was relegated for interference. On the strength of those showings, he will be troublesome, as will Kopara, which will have derived benefit from his trip to and from and race at Riccarton.
