Canty to host N.Z. harrier champs
A highlight of the harrier season in Canterbury this year will be the holding of the national championships on a farm at Cust, North Canterbury, on August 7. The championships usually attracts the country’s top runners, and this year a team of Australian runners is expected to take part. The cross country committee of the Canterbury centre of the Amateur Athletic Association has approved the season’s programme, with the Hagley Relays organised by the University of Canterbury club starting the season on April 24. An addition to previous seasons' programmes is a sponsored road race on May 1 as part of a national series. The final will be held in Wellington on May 8 and televised live. The Presbyterian club, which has in the past held handicap races from Kaiapoi to Christchurch, then Kairaki to Christchurch, has been granted permission to hold a new event
instead this year. It will be a 20km beach' run finishing at South Brighton. Programme: April 24, Hagley Relays: May 1, “Fresh-Up" 10km road’ race; ’May 8. Motueka-Nelson relay; September 11, Takahe-Akaroa relay; September 25, Canterbury road championships; October 2, Greymouth two-person relays; October 9. national road championships, Napier; October 16, Olympic 16km road race. ’
