Freyberg golfer moves to Chch

Rivalrv for positions in the Canterbury golf teams this year will intensify with the arrival of the talented Otago Freyberg . representative, John Sanders, in Christchurch next month. Sanders has been transferred by. the National Bank and will be the accountant at the Victoria Square branch from March 1. Sanders said from Dunedin yesterday that he would love to represent Canterbury and would be available for selection if considered good enough. There seems little doubt that Sanders will be wanted by the Canterbury selectors. The slightly-built Sanders, aged 29. has represented the strong Otago side in six of the last seven Freyberg tournaments and has had 21 wins and eight halves from 42 matches. He way a mem-

ber of the 1978 victorious team. The winner of the Southland match-play championship for three successive years (1978-80). Sanders showed that he was in good form by winning the Dunedin 72-hole stroke event at St Clair recently, a tournament which he had also won the previous year. He is a former Otago stroke champion and won that province’s foursomes championship in 1978. Sanders plans to join a club in Christchurch as soon as possible and while he has one in mind, he said that it would depend on where he found accommodation. Whichever club he does join will find the affable Sanders a big asset and it will enhance its chances of faring well in the inter-club Woodward Cup competition.
