One of the entrants in the South Island Dobermann Club’s ribbon parade, Helga, aged eight, receives some encouragement from Tristan Rossiter, aged three, her owner’s daughter. About 80 dogs took part in the parade at Riccarton House. The parade was held to celebrate the birth of Louis Dobermann, in Germany, in February, 1823. Mr Dobermann, a tax collector, bred the dogs to accompany him as guards when he was on his rounds. Free Spirit Golden Year, owned by Mrs Grimes, of Christchurch, was judged Best Dog on Parade.
