Border clash

Thai troops clashed with Shan rebels at a village on the Burmese border yesterday killing three followers of the opium warlord, Chang Chee-fu, a Thai Army spokesman, has said. They said Thai Government rangers also destroyed two rebel barracks designed to house about 100 men loyal to Chang, also known as Khun Sa at Ban Mae Moh.. The clash involving about 30 men of Chang’s Shan United Army was the first in the area for five days, they said.—Ban Hin Taek. Gloomy forecast The American Treasury Secretary (Mr Donald Regan) has said that unemployment in the United States is likely to reach 10 per cent this year even if the economy recovers in the spring as the Administration expects. The United States unemployment rate now stands at 8.9 per cent, just short of the post-war record of 9 per cent. He said: “We're terribly upset by these unemployment figures, and even with recovery in the spring, we know unemployment lags. We will do our best to try and bring it down.” — Washington.
