Merger plans dropped

Wellington reporter

The proposed merger between two of New Zealand’s most important conservation organisations — the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society and Native Forest Action Council — has been postponed indefinitely.

This decision has been made after the national executive committees of the two organisations were unable to agree on the terms for the merger. A special meeting of the society’s council last November endorsed the merger proposal but since then the two organisations have not been able to agree over the precise details. The two organisations will continue to work in co-opera-tion on conservation issues.

The proposed merger had been controversial in both organisations, but particularly within the society. However, it had seemed that there was now enough support .for it, and relations between the two organisations in future should be the closer for the good will engendered by the merger motfes.
