Top award goes to Harewood garden

Although they entered in the novice section, a Harewood couple carried off the premier award in the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s competition this year. Mr and Mrs A. Ferkatovich, of Harewood Road, also won special awards for their lawns, pond, and vegetables in only their second year in the competition. Their garden’s path to the top started two years ago when it was awarded a certificate of merit by the Papanui Beautification Society. “We thought if we can do that without trying what could we do if we really tried?” Mrs Ferkatovieh said yesterday. Really trying meant spending an average of six hours a day in the garden, but the effort paid off for the Ferkatoviches. “We are really knocked out about winning the premier award,” Mrs Ferkatovieh said. In her opinion the winning quality of their garden is its peacfitl and restful atmosphere. The begonias and the violas helped.

Their advice to any aspiring gardener is to treat your garden like a living thing. “A garden needs love, care, and attention before it will respond/’ Mrs Ferkatovich said.

The Horticultural Society’s secretary, Mr T. W. B. Clarke, described the overall standard of the gardens as “excellent” in spite of the dry conditions and persistent north-westerly winds.

“The conditions tested the expertise of the enthusiastic home gardeners,” he said. Mr Clarke described the premier garden as having an interesting design and displaying many interesting features. Over all the lawns were of agood standard, and better than last year. The judges remarked that there had been an increased interest in unusual trees and shrubs considered difficult to grow in Christchurch. “The colour schemes were much more appealing than last year and gardeners achieved a more harmonious effect,” said Mr Clarke. He described the Sanitarium garden as outstanding and its colours as “breathtaking.” Other results' were:
