'Epidemic of violence in N.Z.’
PA Wellington A link between the increased number of rapes and the present economic and social instability in New Zealand has been suggested by the Federation of Labour’s Women's Advisorv Committee. according to’ Ms Sonja Davies.
"There appears to be a growing epidemic of violence against New Zealand women at the moment — rape and other sexual assault, domestic violence and sexual harassment of women workers on the job." she said. "The Women’s Advisorv Committee believes it is no coincidence that the increase in violence against women has occurred at a time of great instability in the economy and New Zealand society in general." '
She said it was important that women direct their anger against the violence in a constructive attempt to
protect themselves and work towards a , stable economic and social structure.
It was good that women were organising protection for themselves, but this would not be necessary if the police gave a higher priority to womens safety, said Ms Davies.
Employers should also provide greater protection for women who work at night, such as nurses and cleaners, who were often the target for rapists. "Adequate transport arrangements for women night workers are increasingly important when the incidence of violence against women increases." said Ms Davies. She said it was only by speaking out and taking action against violence against women in all its forms that the first steps towards combatting such violence could be taken.
