Breeders’ Stakes a jaunt for The Dimple

By

J. J. BOYLE

The Dimple and The Imposter, successful favourites in successive races for the Dennis brothers at Riccarton yesterday, will now be prepared for rich races at the Wellington autumn meeting.

The Dimple hardly had to draw a deep breath to win the second contest for the CJ.C. Breeders' Stakes. 1800 m. yesterdav. She won running away bv three lengths from Short Stops, another representative for the leading stallion. Noble Bijou, in the race. This was The Dimples filth win from eight starts this season. She has not vet raced outside the South Island this season, but she will have a rich metric mile race at Trent ham next month on her programme.

The Dimple was giving weight all round yesterday, bJI her 56kg blunted none of •’er finishing speed, and she won at her leisure. She ran the 1800 m over a firm track in Imin 49.385ec. The track and race record for the distance is Imin 48.735ee.

The Wingatui jockev. Ali Robinson. immediately'eased The Dimple from the leading group to settle in ninth position. He found nothing to concern him as he brought the favourite forward three wide near the home turn, and when he called on the top weight to go through with her run she showed an al-

most effortless brand of acceleration that had her clear in a few strides. The Dimple shifted ground towards her left close to home, out by that, time the others were struggling lengths behind. Short Stops, a contemporary of The Dimple, earned some marks for her durable qualities by coming home solidly to shade Glydavari for second. Short Stops's summer programme included a start in the Wellington Cup, and she raced against the sprinters on the first day of the C.J.C. meeting last Saturday. Glydavari. the only three-year-old in the field, beat the weakening pacemaker Wyella by three parts of a length for third. Firefly made, ground late from the back for filth, but the Gore-trained Double d'Or. the second favourite, faded to a disappointing tenth.

The Dimple's half-brother (by Native Turn). The Imposter. improved the spectacular record of The Pixie as a producer by winning the Meadow Mushrooms Handicap in style. Ali Kobinson was able to

wear his twin caps in racing for this one. He trams the colt for the Dennis brothers and after he rode him to a comfortable win he said the victory had been encouraging enough to proceedwith plans to run in the New Zealand St. Leger at Trentham next month. This was The Imposter's third win. His first was. al

Wingatui in September, his second al Invercargill at New Year. He was brought to Riccarton for the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas in November. but lost any chance lie had when he was badlv checked about halt wav through the race. Lord of the Dance, the best of The Imposter's rivals yes-

terday. might also be al Trentham next month for the New Zealand St. Leger. This promising gelding by Little Brown Jug's sire. Godavari, has shown finishing powers for minor placings in his last two races, and lie has earned a chance to go for more ground than the 1800 m he managed promisingly yesterday.
